How to write a novel

20th
Sep. × ’09

The 1, 2, 3 of: How to write a novel

  1. Get an idea. Invent some unforgettable characters.
  2. Write every day. Shoot for 500 words/day in this ratio: 60 percent dialogue, 30 percent narrative, 10 percent description. Add conflict to half the pages. Make something happen at least every 3 pages. Stir in some humour. Add a dash of sex. Continue until you have at least 100,000 words. Don’t give up.
  3. Set aside to rest for 6 months. Re-read and remove the most boring 20 percent. Voilà!

How to Solve a Biz Problem

21st
Aug. × ’09

The 1, 2, 3 of: How to Solve a Biz Problem

  1. Recognize Your Have a Problem & Embrace It

    - there’s an old adage in tennis that goes “never change a winning game but always change a loosing one!” which is great advice only if you have the ability to know and the courage to accept when the results you’re getting aren’t what they should, could or need to be

[When things aren't going well, business can be awfully tough . So, if your situation is one that's not much fun, maybe you have 'a problem'. Is this you? Don't despair, almost every problem has a number of reasonable and workable solutions if you only take the time to recognize the problem and embrace it. Now make sure you don't let your emotions run your brain for logically we all know how fighting, trying to avoid or ducking your problems, or worse yet, pretending they're not there, will only cause you more hurt in the long run.]

  2. Consider All Possible Solutions Before Starting to Discard or Dismiss Any

    - your risk here is ‘throwing the baby out with the bath water’, which is why I say you need to park your judgmental, dismissive nature until you done all the necessary research and creative solution exploration work first (and importantly, don’t be too proud, ego-ruled or cheap to ask for, get and consider expert advice from those properly qualified to give it > consider it cost effective insurance that will better insure you come up with ‘the’ right solution that can and will work for you

[www.CompassNorthInc.com is one of many well qualified sources you can turn to for sound business advice]

  3. ACT on that One You Select is Best & Most Practical

    - with a full list of alternative solutions in hand, all you need to do is ACT once you’ve mapped out:

    • Plan A (best course of action),
    • Plan B (fall back No. 1 should A not work) and
    • Plan C (fall back No. 2 should both A & B prove no-go’s)

Remember: Success is possible no matter the odds you think you face because the only certain ‘deal killers’ are despair and giving up.

Keeping a small business in business

5th
Jun. × ’09

The 1, 2, 3 of: Keeping a small business is business

  1. Plan for profit.

Profit doesn’t just happen – it’s not “the money that’s left over”. Profit is the money your business earns for itself. And to succeed, you have to build profit into your plan. (You do have a plan, right?) As the owner, you get to decide what to do with the profit, but the profit belongs to the business first.

  2. Market without money.

Every move you make is a marketing move. So everything you do should be assessed for its power to help your marketing. Is your business card working hard? Do you have a great “elevator speech”? Does it make you interesting? Do you have a network? Do you use it well? For marketing a small business, energy is more important that money.

  3. Get paid – every time.

If you can’t get paid, what’s the point of being in business. If you have trouble making service or collection calls, get some training. There are techniques – like the famous 20-day Diary – that can help you get the money that’s coming to you.

A good life coach will….

3rd
Jun. × ’09

The 1, 2, 3 of: A good life coach will….

  1. Listen

Listening is a key technique for all great coaches. Often when people
listen they think in their heads “this relates to me because…” or “I
have a story for her now…” and as they think these things, they STOP
listening. They give up a second or two of their concentration and
often lose track of what the other person is saying. A good coach has
ALL their attention on the client, they are never ‘in their heads’.

  2. Ask a powerful question

Powerful questions are SHORT, SIMPLE and always OPEN! “What’s
next?”…”What’s important to you?” …. “What does that look like?” A
powerful question CAN NOT be answered by yes or no. Ever.

  3. Make a  Request

A request of often some sort of action that will lead to great learning
about what the clients wants, needs and desires. We gain experience and
    awareness from action.

Procrastination

The 1, 2, 3 of: Procrastination

  1. Assign ranking to undesirable task or action. Usually last unless you’re not very good at this.

  2. As top ranking tasks or actions are completed create new ones to take their place leaving the undesirable task or action firmly on the back burner. Don’t worry, as you become more practiced that feeling of guilt and unease will dissipate.

  3. Repeat as necessary.

Making the perfect margarita and then enjoying it.

1st
Jun. × ’09

The 1, 2, 3 of: Making the perfect margarita and then enjoying it.

  1. Obtain the following things. One or more friends to share this experience, one bottle of quality tequila, a bottle of triple sec, a dozen large juicy limes, a juicer, a tray of ice cubes, large pitcher, stir stick, tall frosted glasses, cutting board, sharp knife and salt for the rim of the glasses.

  2. You should start by squeezing the limes. A simple rule of thumb is that you will end up with 2 1/2 times the quantity of lime juice which you squeeze. Once you have the amount of lime juice you require pour it into the large pitcher. Add to the lime juice an equal part of tequila, then 1/2 that amount of triple sec. Toss in a handful of ice cubes, a few slices fresh lime and give the whole thing a good stirring with the stir stick to cool it down. Now take your glasses and rub a small piece of lime around each rim, pour a small handful of salt onto the cutting board and run the glass rims through the salt. Go easy on the salt it’s better for your heart. Put a small sliver of lime on each rim. Add a few cubes to each glass.

  3. Put on whatever music makes you feel good and helps you and your friends to relax. Find a comfortable place to sit, preferably outside on a nice summers day. Fill the glasses being careful not to go above the bottom edge of the salted rim. Sit down, relax and enjoy life.

Getting a motorcycle out of your system

1st
Jun. × ’09

The 1, 2, 3 of: Getting a motorcycle out of your system

  1. Take an approved motorcycle training course and pass it with flying colors. Purchase the proper safety equipment including a good quality full face helmet. Get the best insurance coverage you possibly can. Buy a motorcycle which is mechanically sound and sized for your size and ability.

  2. Once you hit the open road don’t take any chances, trust no one who is driving close to you. Be very careful in wet weather and at night. Stay clear of major highways if you can, also be extremely careful of inner city driving. Never take anyone on the back of your bike and possibly put their life at risk. Ride your motorcycle for only one year. One year only, period.

  3. If after one year you are still alive to talk about the experience then sell your bike and all it’s accessories to someone else who wants to experience the same thing you just did. Promise yourself you will never ride a motorbike again and then proceed to live a long and happy life chasing and grabbing hold of your other dreams. Ride safe everyone. Enjoy.
